Whitby has a huge selection of shops on both the East side and West Side of the harbour.
Whitby's West Side Shopping
Baxtergate hosts a number of well established retail outlets belonging to well known household names. Alongside some of these shops are the smaller independent retailers, for instance fruiterers, florists, butcher and cobblers. There are banks and a building society alongside cafes in this street.
Flowergate running parallel with Baxtergate, is home to different clothing retailers, all independent. A variety of greeting card shops, travel and photographic, furniture, shoe and gift shops in addition to the charity shops which are in many towns nowadays. From the swing bridge, Flowergate can be reached via Golden Lion Bank
Skinner Street, a busy thoroughfare between Flowergate and the West Cliff has a number of quality outlets including a family run bookshop and stationers, antique, lingerie and shoe shops. Ladies clothing and outdoor clothing alongside jewellers make for a comprehensive shopping experience.
Pier Road running alongside the harbour is home to many of the tourist shops offering the visitor the expected merchandise for a seaside town, but also there is a clever mix of the more unusual gifts, sweet and rock stalls, a gallery, and slightly off the main road are fishing tackle, antique, clothing and ice-cream shops..
Whitby's East Side Shopping
Church Street is home to some some quite unusual shops in addition to the well known bookstores, outdoor clothing, jewellery and ladies clothing establishments. Galleries here, offer original works of art alongside sculptures and crystal shops. There is quite an eclectic variety to fascinate the visitor along this ancient cobbled street.
Grape Lane parallel to Church Street is one of the oldest streets in Whitby and offers a childrens shop, bookstore, woodworkers, jewellers, antique shop and a gallery to name but a few. The street gently winds round to join with Church Street.
Sandgate, a vibrant bustling narrow street sells the famous Whitby jet jewellery so renowned around the country and a ‘must have’ souvenir for many holidaymakers. Gift shops and a sweet shop, an unusual clothing store and fresh seafood establishment with a comprehensive window display complement the varied assortment of outlets along this street leading to the Market Place.
