Children excelling in Whitby Yorkshire

Last week was quite a busy week for children in Whitby Yorkshire.  The Eskdale Festivel of Arts came to a close last weekend after two weeks of dedicated performances by children of the town and some from futher afield.  The first week focused mainly on poetry, prose and sections of acting.   The second week concentrated on music and the excellence of the performances was quite inspiring.  Ranging from classical to modern, to jazz and orchestral music.  Solo perfomers, choirs and orchestras all played their part to make this a most wonderful fortnight to showcase the talent of the children in Whitby and the local villages around  Whitby Yorkshire.

Children in Castleton have been on a field trip to Ganister  quarries to  learn about the geology of the Jurassic Coast on the Yorkshire Coastline.  The children  have been busily making a display of their work to be exhibited on Thursday at Castleton Primary School at 2 p.m.  This is part of a project run by the NE Yorkshire Geology Trust.

On the sports front, children have been competing at this year’s Whitby Primary School gymnastics competition which  was held at Caedmon School.  Children from the local villages and surrounding areas competed against each other in such events as gymnastics, floor excercises  and apparatus equipment.

Congratulations and well done to all the children who have taken part in in both academic, sporting and entertainment activities in Whitby Yorkshire this past couple of weeks.

Traffic is now flowing freely on the Mayfield traffic lights after completion of the work last week.  However, Lythe Bank is closed to traffic until Friday and then again from the 28th March to the 1st April to allow for  resurfacing work.  Diversions will be in place at times of closure. Work is also taking place with traffic lights in use  on Stakesby Road but work has now been almost completed on Upgang Lane.  Whitby’s Swing Bridge is still closed to traffic.

West Pier and St. Mary’s Church, Whitby UK

There’s nothing better than an early morning walk on a Sunday in our lovely town.  Yesterday walking along the harbour, the water was serene and tranquil reflecting the cottages on the East Side. Although the sun failed to show an appearance, the temperature was fairly mild and there was an intermittent light rain shower.

There were a few early risers walking along Whitby’s West Pier taking in the lovely views of the town behind them.  As an added bonus the  West Pier Lighthouse was open to the public.  The Whitby Lifeboat sailed into the harbour whilst the inshore lifeboat was making manoeuvres just off the west beach. There were a few fisherman on the very end of the pier where it must be said, it was very windy and blustery.

The return walk along the harbour was accompanied by the bell ringing of St. Mary’s Church on the East Cliff, which echoed all around the harbour in the still air.

The pleasure boats were taking advantage of the calm seas to take visitors out for short trips to sea and the Whitby cafes were doing brisk business too.  It really felt that the town was starting to witness the beginnings of this year’s  tourist season.

So if you’re out and about on a Sunday morning then a walk down the West Pier to the accompaniment of the Bells of St. Mary’s followed by a hot steaming coffee is surely a treat!

The Weekend in Whitby UK

We  have had a lovely week weatherwise here  in Whitby UK. We have had lovely sunshine, a few rain showers, blustery winds and rainbows.  It’s amazing this time of year how many ‘seasons’ of Whitby weather we can have in one day!

As we enter the weekend there are just a few things to mention for anyone visiting the town.  The swing bridge is still closed to traffic due to the footpath widening, but pedestrian access is available.  This situation will continue for at least the next week.  There is still road works on the Mayfield Road traffic lights where manual traffic control is in operation.  Works on a smaller scale are on Upgang Lane near to the Post Office.

Locally there are a number of events taking place.  There are jumble sales in Castleton, Lythe and Ruswarp tomorrow.  Glaisdale has a Spring Sale and at Goathland there is a Village Barn Dance.  These too are taking place tomorrow.

The Eskdale Festival of Arts concludes this weekend.  There is a concert performance of this year’s winners on Sunday at the Whitby Pavilion from 2 p.m.

Also locally this week we had a special visitor to RAF Fylingdales.  Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal arrived by the Queen’s helicopter early on Wednesday morning to open the new £12.5m mess.  Princess Anne also had a grand tour of the early warning station and later met some of the station’s personnel.

The forecast for the Whitby Weather this weekend is actually not as good as we have had all week but hopefully any visitors to Whitby UK in the next few days will enjoy our wonderful town whatever the weather.

Rainbows and Whale Bones in Whitby Yorkshire

A view of a rainbow from the Harbour in Whitby Yorkshire

Rainbows and Whalebones in Whitby Yorkshire

What a day of contrasts in Whitby Yorkshire today.  Early morning saw brilliant sunshine followed by some small rain showers.  This culminated in some wonderful rainbows out to sea.  The short bursts of rain and sun caused them to play with the light for well over an hour.  The best viewpoint to watch them was from near Captain Cook’s Statue and the Whalebones.  Capturing the view on camera were a few school parties and groups of visitors.

Although quite blustery down by the harbour, this didn’t seem to deter the number of tourists visiting Whitby, Yorkshire to enjoy the bracing air here too the rainbows were clearly visible.

Down by the marina the boat owners are busy painting and maintaining their motor boats and yachts ready for the coming fishing and sailing season.  The air is filled with the sound of  the shrieking seagulls and the tinkling of the wire ropes of the masts of the yachts.

So wherever you are in our lovely town of Whitby Yorkshire on this mostly sunny but very windy day whether on the Whitby West Cliff by Captain Cook’s Statue and the  Whalebones  or down by the harbour and marina, there is always something of interest to see.

Pancakes in Whitby, Yorkshire?

Well we woke up to a heavy frost and then brilliant sunshine which belied the temperature of 4 degrees. Br!!!!  The best activity today would be to wrap up warm and have a brisk walk around Pannett Park taking in the wonderful panoramic views of the town from just outside the museum. Then possibly a treat in the form of a hot chocolate, coffee or a nice cup of tea.

The swing bridge is still closed to traffic for essential repairs.

Whilst out and about don’t forget your ingredients for pancakes tonight or if you are just visiting there will be many eateries happy to serve them!

Spring in Whitby, Yorkshire

Spring Crocuses in Whitby Yorkshire

It certainly seems like spring has arrived in our wonderful town.  The winding purple and white crocus path is in full bloom on Mayfield Road  and there is just the beginnings  of the pink blossom on the flowering cherry trees, certainly a pretty sight on the approach to the town.  Summer planting is in evidence all around and the daffodils and  primroses are nearly ready to burst forth  in the predicted sunshine of this  coming week.

When driving into the town  please be aware that traffic is prohibited from crossing the swing bridge owing to the widening of the footpaths  from this Monday 7th March for approximately two weeks.  Apart from this Monday, pedestrian access  will be maintained unless absolutely  unavoidable.

Local  people and visitors may not be aware that the Whitby Pavilion is now showing some of  the latest films in the theatre.  This coming weekend it is scheduled to show The King’s Speech.  Please check the Whitby Gazette for details.

This years Eskdale Festival of Arts is underway  and continues throughout next week at the Whitby Pavilion.  Many of the local schools are represented  and are to showcase their musical talent in the coming week.  The various winners will perform at a special concert on the 13th March.

The local football team ‘The Blues’ are to be congratulated on their  4-0 victory  over  Ossett Town, their next match is Saturday 5th March  against Colwyn Bay.  Here’s hoping  that they can repeat their success.

Hope everyone enjoys the milder weather that is predicted for this weekend and the next week.
