Shops in Whitby Yorkshire

Shops in Whitby Yorkshire and looking decidedly festive at the moment in preparation for the coming Christmas Celebrations.  It hardly seems any time since we had the scorching heat of the summer and the wonderful Indian Summer in September and October and here we are in the run up to Christmas.

The Halloween decorations, Bonfire Night decorations and fireworks left the shelves and suddenly there appeared Christmas Cards, decorations, tinsel, lights and all manner of festive fayre.

Scarborough Borough Council has played its part as well as the Shops in Whitby with regard to the Christmas Season.  There have been a number of decorations adorning some of the lamp posts for the last couple of months but this week has seen the erection of the Christmas Trees.  The coloured lights at the bottom of Bagdale and the lovely decorated tree near the Tourist Information Centre (albeit a little on the tilt) are a delight.  In contrast, (by colour), the white lights on the tree near the Swing Bridge contrast with the polar bear which sits atop the shop nearby.   Mentioning the Swing Bridge, the Golden Crown has made an appearance once again.

The Shops in Whitby are very popular with the tourists visiting at this time of year as it is possible to choose some very unusual gifts from some of the smaller indedpendent retail outfits, as opposed to the larger chain stores.  Church Street has many such shops with most unusual stock, mostly pertaining to Whitby itself.  The shops along  Pier Road too have unique merchandise, more often than not in the confectionery line, but nevertheless there are the unusual gems to be found.

Baxtergate and Flowergate have some of the larger establishments which are currently displaying some wonderful shop windows decorated for the season.  Tinsel and lights in abundance as well as the delightful musical renditions of carols etc.  Golden Lion Bank and the other smaller streets that lead off Baxtergate and Flowergate are all playing their part.

Skinner Street, not to be outdone, has some lovely shop window displays, and not only the shops but the cafes too.  Grape Lane and the other shops off Church Street i.e. Sandgate and the Market Place are worth of note.  Individual shops are too numerous to mention individually but suffice to say that the majority of Shops in Whitby are endeavouring to make the Christmas Festive Season full of colour, light and all things merry and bright!

There is currently an exhibition of the works by David Hockney ‘s Grimm’s Fairy Tales at Trattels and Geall, 127 Church Street, Whitby.  They are prints of etchings made by David Hockney in approximately 1969.

Hockney was a student of art at the Royal College of Art in 1961.  He developed his own

style of black and white sketches and it was not until he went to Paris in 1973 that he acquired the skill for working in colour.

The exhibition commenced in October and will run until the 30th November.  Times are everyday from 10.00 a.m. till 5.00 p.m. except Mondays.

The Etchings are displayed in a number of rooms in a relaxing atmosphere and are well worth a visit.  Rather unusual to view if not familiar with the style of David Hockney but an interesting variation on the familiar illustrations of Grimm’s Fairy Tales.

Whitby Gothic Weekend November 2011 has been taking place this weekend.   The streets of Whitby UK has seen the Gothic community showcasing some wonderful outfits as they have been strolling along Church Street, the Swing Bridge area and Pier Road.   Alongside the Gothic folk there have been large numbers of photographers eager to snap the most unusual street scenes and participants.

After a cloudy start to the Sunday morning, the clouds lifted and glorious sunshine prevailed although quite cool.  The more ‘underdressed’ lady Goths braved the chilly temperatures with their display of fishnets and basques, whilst the majority were in wonderful crinolines and I would expect a whole lot warmer!  The men were not to be outdone attired in a wonderful array of period costumes including top-hats, tails and walking canes.

This year there has been a division of the Whitby Gothic Weekends between the Official Goth Weekend and the Dark Daisy Promotions resulting in a confusion as to which event to follow.  Next year, however, it has been decided that both the Gothic events will be held concurrently which the Gothic community have welcomed.

The Gothic Weekend has drawn acts from all parts of the country and, indeed, the world, to perform at venues over the last two weekends.  Bands have been playing regularly at the Whitby Pavilion, The Resolution and the Rifle Club.  In addition there have been the bizarre bazaars held in the Whitby Pavilion where all manner of Gothic clothing and memorabilia can be viewed and purchased.

Hopefully the split between the Whitby Gothic Weekend and Dark Daisy Promotions Weekend will be resolved and the dates for next years Spring and Autumn Goth events can be announced well in advance to enable ticket sales to be released in order for the Gothic Community  to arrange their holidays in good time.

As has been evident over the past two weekends, not only have the Goths enjoyed their weekend events, the members of the public who have travelled to Whitby to watch and also the many locals too have enjoyed the almost carnival atmoshphere with cameras at the ready to snap some of the wonderful costumes on parade.

Hopefully when the two events are combined again next year there will be once again a fantastic Whitby Goth Weekend event that will bring all the Goths and the various other groups associated with the Dark Daisy Promotions together.   It really is fantastic for the town of Whitby bringing in business to both the hotels, guest houses, holiday cottages, restaurants, cafes and pubs as well as the knock on effect to other businesses in the town.

The townsfolk of Whitby Uk have really taken the celebration of Halloween on board in as much as the Whitby shops and Whitby cafes all around the town have decorated their shop windows with all things ‘spooky’ , ‘ghostly’ and ‘pumpkinny’.  In addition, many of the Whitby restaurants and Whitby pubs have adorned their premises with the Halloween paraphernalia.  Charity shops too have decorated their windows joining in the theme.

For many years the children of the town have decorated pumpkins and indeed turnips!  Funny face carvings and lit by candles, the children would carry their lanterns,  knock on doors ‘trick or treating’ with the expectation of a handful of treats.  Over the years, however, the commercialism has kicked in so that all the card shops and general stores  in the run up to Halloween have their establishments decorated and  shelves filled with Halloween costumes, scary masks, fake cobwebs, spiders, witches hats and capes.  Many houses display the orange pumpkin lights the brighten the dark nights before and after the Halloween night.

Television too has paraded the Halloween theme onto their programmes with contestants on the ballroom shows and talent shows dressed in their outfits, mainly orange, red or black adorned with spiders or webs.

Walking around the town over the weekend has raised a chuckle or two with all the window displays and indeed the number of visitors and residents alike (who knows)  who are dressed in their Halloween costumes be it a Dracula, Bride of Dracula, Beetlejuice, Clowns Skeletons and the occasional pumpkin!

This week has also been the weekend for the Dark Daisy Goth promotions, a spin off from the official Whitby Goth Weekend which is lined up for the next weekend.  This being so, the town has once again seen a large number of Goths visiting and staying in the town.

In conclusion, it would appear that Whitby Uk and its business folk are trying their best to attract custom and bring more trade  into the town.  Judging by the last few days they are succeeding on both counts. Whitby Uk Halloween has been a great success and enjoyed by countless children and adults alike.

Whitby Uk Wartime Weekend took place this last weekend on the 14th, 15th and 16th of October.  It was the first time that the North Yorkshire Moors Railway brought the Wartime Weekend into Whitby by way of the line directly into the town’s railway station.

The annual event undertaken by the North Yorkshire Moors is proving very popular year upon year as evidenced by the large numbers flocking to the various stations along the NYMR line between Pickering and Whitby  including Grosmont, Levisham and Goathland.

Many of the businesses in Whitby supported the weekend by window-dressing their shops in the 1940’s style and shop staff wearing wartime clothing.   Visitors unaware of the Whitby Wartime Weekend would have thought that they had ‘stepped back in time’ judging by the number of 1940s  army personnel, elegantly dressed ladies and even some Nazis!

To complement the Whitby Wartime Weekend, ‘Welcome to Yorkshire‘ erected numerous stalls near to the Tourist Information Centre selling homemade pies, jams, pickles, jewellery, oils etc. together with stands displaying newspaper cuttings dating back to 1943 for a glimpse of how the local people lived during the second world war.   Music of the era played as a backdrop  with the stallholders dressing in the wartime style to give an authenticity to the proceedings.

Wartime recipe demonstrations were held undercover at the dock-end by various chefs to an enthusiastic audience, a large number probably reminiscing about family meals and the difficulties of rationing.

Entertainment was on hand outside the Tourist Office by singer Cherie Lawrence looking every inch the part of a 1940’s entertainer.

The weather remained kind for the majority of the three day events altogether ensuring that the Whitby Wartime Weekend was a success and hopefully it will be an annual calendar event.

Sandsend Railway Station, Whitby UK

Sandsend railway station, Whitby UK

Here is a selection of photos from the old Sandsend Railway Station and the line through to Whitby.  The photos are kindly donated by Mr. Les Goodall.

Although affording fantastic coastal views to the passenger, the line was beset with problems arising from the bridges and viaducts needed to traverse the rugged coastline.  Eventually the difficulties encountered and the running costs combined with the Beeching Cuts saw the axing of this coastal route.  The last journey made on this route was on the 5th May 1958.  The demise of Whitby Redcar and Middlesbrough Union Railway line thus ended a truly memorable railway experience for many passengers, the like of which will probably never be seen again.

The last stationmaster at Sandsend Railway Station was Mr. Charles Sadler Goodall who held this position from 1943 until the station closure in 1958.  Displayed are a number of photographs from Mr. Charles Sadler Goodalls’ Collection which have been reproduced with the kind permission of Mr. J. L. Goodall.   Photo of Sandsend Station covered in snow in 1947

Hotels, Whitby

Hotels Whitby at this time of the year are taking a well earned break from the busy hustle and bustle of the summer season.  This year’s weather has been most unusual in that we ended the spring with glorious sunshine and entered summer on a high which was then to disappoint with its gloomy cloudy days.  However, this has hardly distracted from the numbers of visitors to our wonderful Whitby town.

Hotels Whitby have seen little change to the numbers regardless of the inclement weather, in fact, many proprietors have reported above average room occupancy especially over the Folk Week and the Whitby Regatta Week.

This break will be shortlived, however, with the advent of Whitby Gothic Weekend due to commence at the end of October.  The ever increasing number of Whitby Goths Weekend visitors flocking to our town ensures that the summer season extends well into autumn bringing much needed revenue not only to the Whitby Hotels but also Whitby Bed and Breakfast accommodation, Whitby Guest Houses and also Whitby holiday cottage accommodation. Whitby Cafes and Whitby Restaurants are also benefitting as well as the knock on effect to the wide variety of shops and other tourist related businesses in the town.

The weather of last weekend certainly boosted the number of visitors and day-trippers. Hopefully the coming week will see mild temperatures to further enhance the tourism trade.

Whitby Uk once again opened its doors to the annual Whitby Folk Week. This year has been the 46th Whitby Folk Week and the event continues to attract visitors  from near and far.

There were over 1,000 hours of events over the week for which season tickets and day tickets were available to purchase in advance. Whitby Hotels, Whitby Guest Houses and Whitby Bed and Breakfast establishments were filled to capacity alongside the Whitby Caravan Parks.  Stakesby School allowed their school field to  become the official campsite for the Folk Week season ticket holders.

Although the weather was not the best, it still allowed many of the outdoor activities to take place giving enormous pleasure to the crowds that gathered to watch the dancers and musicians performing around the bandstand and the tourist information office.

Not only was there music and dancing in the streets, there were various activities held around the town.  Children’s events, family events,  music stalls and a craft fair all added to the wide range of events available.  This year once again there was a competition for the ‘John Birmingham Cup’ for aspiring songwriters.

The dates for next year are the 18th to the 24th August which will no doubt see the town of Whitby once again filled with music, dancing and laughter for the 47th Whitby Folk Festival Week.
